Why Reinvent the Wheel?

Hello Bloggers,

There are times when I come to a lesson and think one of two things: 1) How can I make this lesson more relevant for this year's group of students or 2) I have taught this lesson roughly five million times and I want to change it up a little. In an attempt to remedy one, or both, of these dilemmas, I often get on the web and open up Google. I always think I can quickly search the web for a simple addition to a lesson plan, but more often than not this consumes much more time than originally planned. This leads us to the focus for this week.

Teachers First is a teacher resource site that can eliminate the pain and agony of investing a great deal of time trying to figure out how to spice up a lesson. The resources found on this site are endless; from entire grade and subject-specific lesson plans to the "Featured Sites" section. This is a website that should be on your favorites list.

Your assignment for this week is to check out the website and post about a tool, lesson plan, or idea from the site you found useful or that you could possibly use in the future.

Okay, maybe its just the timing, so I bookmarked this page and will go back to it in two weeks, but it seems like a lot of searching to find what you want. Don't get me wrong, it is a wonderful source. I even found a great science page with games on it that I will add to my swift site. But it sucks a lot of time out of my already busy day. I can see me going to it when I am tired of teaching the same lesson or when I want to suppliment. I will probably look at it more deeply when I am not learning a new curriculum (math.) I guess what I am getting at it that I like the site, I like that yoiu can save your searches and have a favorites on your homepage. Its nice that they have a whats new section and seem to have many different very cool links. But I have seen a few really good sites like this and it really does take more time then I am able to spare for now.

As teachers we are always looking for more time in our day. Part of my role as the elementarey tech coach is to stay current on new tools, ideas, and trends. I set aside time once a week to read blogs and visit websites. (I also set aside time to catch up on e-mails and delete items from my inbox and sent items.) Then, I add links to sites related to our Tahoma curriculum to the Technology Resources for Tahoma Elementary Teachers site. I also share these sites/ideas with the 10Tech Teacher Leaders so they can share them with their grade level team.
